NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) is a coenzyme found in every living cell, made of two nucleotides joined through their phosphate groups. It shuttles electrons between the oxidised (NAD+) and reduced (NADH) forms in the reactions of glycolysis, the citric acid cycle and oxidative phosphorylation. It is also consumed as a substrate by sirtuins, PARP enzymes and CD38, which links its availability to research on DNA repair, cellular stress responses and cellular aging. Published work describes NAD+ levels declining with age in several tissues, which is a principal reason the molecule and its precursors are studied.
